I found this iPhone app last month, I bought it, read the magazine on my iPhone, and have been thinking about it quite a bit over these last few weeks.
What does it mean to get a magazine on my iPhone? It is the ultimate in convenience. I don’t have to go to the bookstore to pick up my copy. There is no paper being shipped around the country then recycled when I’m done with the issue.
But what I’m really wondering about is what it means to photographers. Compared to the print version, the iPhone version of Esquire has very little in the way of advertising. If this is the future, and I truly believe it is, what does it mean to the advertising industry? Things will have to change rapidly, and it will be interesting to watch and see how the advertising world evolves over the next few years.
I stumbled across a great new iPhone app today – from one of my favorite internet radio stations, KCRW.
I’ve been a fan of KCRW for years now, but was always frustrated that I couldn’t play their music streams from my iPhone, even though their stream would appear as just another playlist in iTunes.
But with their new KCRW app, I can stream their music from wherever.
If you’re not familiar with KCRW, check them out. Based out of Santa Monica College, they play what their DJs want to play, and aren’t stuck with playlists that has been the demise of too many radio stations. Have a listen – and don’t forget to donate! KCRW survives on donations alone.
As I’ve done every year for the past 8 years, I volunteered my time to take photos of athletes in the Kingston Triathlon.
This year, for the first time since I’ve been shooting at the event, it rained – and boy, did it rain! Since my gear isn’t exactly water-proof (Hasseblad cameras aren’t meant to face the elements, unlike the Canon and Nikon DSLRs). I found myself huddled under the finish tent, with a few other photographers trying to get what shots we could.
As a result, far fewer shots than past years, but nonetheless, I got a few fun shots for the athletes to enjoy.
I bumped into a really fantastic artist this morning doing errands before today’s shoot – Per-Henrik Gurth. If you have kids, you probably know him as the illustrator in the amazing children’s books “Canada 123,” and “ABC of Canada.” Both are top sellers.
Per’s opening a retail store in Kingston – he’s standing in front of the store in the photo. Check it out!

Looking forward to the store opening so I can load up on his wicked t-shirts.
Got my iPhone 3GS a few weeks ago, and have really been having lots of fun with it.
A few days after getting the phone, I went on a vacation with the family, and it seemed the kids were obsessed with knowing every 5 minutes where we were on the map. They were amazed – or were they? It’s something they’re growing up with, so I think my wife and I were more amazed – they just took it for granted.
So that experience changes the way I think about photography, and what it means to talk to the new generation through visuals. It’s an exciting time.
Of course, it comes in handy for sharing shots of props with stylists…
Props
Or even taking videos of the kids dribbling a basketball…
Apparently you can talk on it too! But is that really important anymore?
