I got to shoot another magazine cover – this one for The County Grapevine magazine. I’ve had the pleasure of shooting covers for them in the past, and it’s always a great day of shooting for everyone.
The team was composed of Ruth Gangbar styling food, and Laura Branson on props. Breanne Sinibaldi assisted me with the shooting.
We were asked to shoot a number of cheeses from Fifth Town Artisan Cheese for the cover. With wonderful cheeses, we had lots of options to work with.
Thanks County Grapevine – till next issue!

Looks great Derek! Can’t wait to get a copy of the issue in print.
I’ll have a few here next week, so I’ll give you one!
Hi Derek, great work! I live in southern California and just wanted to ask how you got started in the food photography and how you approached new clients?
Thanks!
Julian
Hi Julian,
I was actually approached by a food stylist and asked if I shot food. We did a trial shoot together, and that gave me my start!
You would approach new clients just like you would any of your marketing efforts – you have to be aggressive, put together promotional material, and of course have good quality work.
The key is to remember that you are the photographer – work with great food stylists and prop stylists who can assemble great looking sets. Without them, a food photographer is nothing. If you’re just starting out, contact stylists in your area to see if you can shoot with them. You can also practice on your own – go to the local food market, find foods that interest you, and shoot them. Can be as simple as mushrooms on a table.
Derek
Hey Derek,
thanks for the feedback. I will definitely put something together. Thanks for the illustrations on how you approached your shots. If you’re ever in Southern Cali look me up. It would be great to work with you.
Sounds excellent Julian – and don’t hesitate to ask questions.
